Flora Dress the Second

Hello, dear selfmakers,

last summer, I liked to wear my airy Flora dress out of Liberty tana lawn Forget-me-nots so much that I made me another one. 
 
Letzten Sommer trug ich mein luftiges Flora Dress aus dem Forget-me-nots Liberty Tana Lawn so gerne, dass ich mir noch eines nähte. 

For my birthday dress 2014, I opted for the knielength hem and chose the lovely flowery Liberty Tana Lawn Edna C.

Für mein Geburtstagskleid 2014 wählte ich die Knielänge und entschied mich für Liberty Tana Lawn Edna C.

My first dress is fitting well, but the wraps which are going over the bosom trend to slide forming diagonal front pleats (at most other versions seen, too). I took some fabric out to obtain wraps that cross at a lower point.

Mein erstes Kleid passt gut, aber die (falschen) Wickelteile gehen über die Brust und haben beim Tragen die Tendenz, zwischen die Brüste zu rutschen und darunter diagonale Falten zu bilden. Deshalb nahm ich etwas von der Überkreuzung weg, dass die Kante etwas steiler verläuft.

  

Apart from that, I sewed everything like last time.

Sonst nähte ich alles wie zuvor.

To make a little outfit, I knitted the little cropped jacket Myrna by Andi Satterlund to go with it.

Um ein kleines neues Outfit zu haben, strickte ich das Kurzjäckchen Myrna von Andi Satterlund als Begleitung.

In retrospect, the the first version's fit is better, albeit forming that pleat. I have to take care of the neckline at this one, there are some pleats, too, and probably I will secure it with some stitches by hand.

Im Nachhinein sitzt das erste Kleid besser. Es formt zwar diese Falten, aber das ist nicht weiter schlimm. Dieses Kleid ist sehr offenherzig, ich muss hier auf den Ausschnitt  aufpassen und zeigt oben Falten. Ich werde ihn wohl mit ein paar Stichen sichern.

But I do love my last year's birthdaydress!
Dennoch liebe ich mein letztjähriges Geburtstagskleid und werde es in den Urlaub mitnehmen!

Today at MeMadeMittwoch, there is a theme for the last meeting before the holidays: "I am packing my suitcase."

Heute zum letzten MeMadeMittwoch vor der Sommerpause gibt es das Thema: "Ich packe meinen Koffer."

Unser Urlaub ist erst in drei Wochen. Deshalb zeige ich Euch, was ich im Mai für ein paar Tage in München gepackt habe. Die Outfits könnt Ihr beim Me-Made-May sehen.

There are packing cubes and folders that keep the suitcase organised. When travelling by two with one suitcase, you can use different colours to find each one's easily. At IKEA, there are similar bags for little money.

Es gibt Kleider-/Hemden-Falt- und andere Packtaschen, die den den Koffer ordentlich halten. Für wenn man zu zweit einen Koffer nutzt, gibt es verschiedene Farben. Ich mag sowas. Bei IKEA gibt es inzwischen ähnliche Taschen für wenig Geld.

Downton Abbey inspired watercolour linnen Malvarosa Dress

My dear sewists,

So this is my second Malvarosa dress. Although I had bought quite a lot of fabrics at a fabric sale one month ago, I couldn't leave this remnant linnen at our lovely local fabric store Garçonne. I bought the last 1,70m with the pattern already in my mind. 

Dies ist mein zweites Malvarosa Dress. Obwohl ich mir kürzlich ziemlich viel Stoff bei einem Fabrikverkauf  zugelegt hatte, konnte ich dieses Reststück von 1,70m bei unserem hiesigen schönen Stoffgeschäft Garconne nicht liegen lassen. Ich hatte da bereits diesen Schnitt im Kopf.

I love to dress my first pale pink linnen Malvarosa very much. It is so airy and comfortable and the last weeks have been quite hot.

Ich mag mein erstes zartrosa Leinen-Malvarosa sehr. Es ist so schön luftig und war die letzten so heißen Wochen sehr angenehm zu tragen.

The one change I made to my first one is to draw new front and back facings corresponding to the front and back pattern pieces. I don't like how the armhole facings flap out when dressing. 

Die Änderung gegenüber meinem ersten Kleid sind neu konstruierte zusammengefasste Ausschnittbelege. Ich mag nicht, wie die Armausschnittbelege herausklappen wollen.

Because of the bodice en bias grain and because of the print direction, I cut the skirt in one piece along the cross grain. The selvedge at the hem had a small serged seam.

Wegen des schrägen Fadenlaufs der Oberteile und der Richtung des Drucks schnitt ich den Rock in einem Stück quer zum Fadenlauf zu. Die Webkante am Saum hatte eine schmale Overlockversäuberung.

I repeated the changes I had made before: 

- front and back bodice pieces in bias grain

- two vertical darts in the back

- shortened the bodice by 7cm and

- lengthened the skirt by 7cm, skirt en cross grain due to the print.

Die zuvor gemachten Änderungen behielt ich bei:
- beide Oberteile in schrägem Fadenlauf
- zwei vertikale Abnäher im Rücken
- Oberteil um 7cm kürzer und
- Rockteil um 7cm verlängert.

I first sewed all the shoulder seams and pressed the seam allowances apart. Then I sewed the neckline right side to right side being careful to respect the shoulder seams, center front and center back. I trimmed the facing SA and clipped all the seam allowances every centimeter. I pressed them to the facing and understitched. Then I turned the facing and pressed the neckline from the facing side so that I would see the seamline. Thereby, the seam will not be visible at the outside.

Erst nähte ich alle Schulternähte und bügelte die Nahtzugaben auseinander. Dann nähte ich den Beleg am Halsausschnitt rechts auf rechts auf das Oberteil und achtete darauf, dass Schulternähte und vordere und hintere Mitte aufeinandertreffen. Ich schnitt die Beleg-NZ zurück und schnitt alle Nahtzugaben jeden Zentimeter kurz bis zur Naht ein. Ich bügelte die NZ zum Beleg und nähte sie auf diesem knappkantig ab, legte den Beleg nach innen und bügelte die Halsausschnittkante auf dem Beleg so, dass die Naht knapp sichtbar war. So ist der Beleg von außen unsichtbar.

Principally, I sewed the facing like shown here. I did not topstitch, but understitch the seam allowances to the facing.

Nachträglich fand ich eine Anleitung, wie ich es gemacht hatte. Ich habe aber den Ausschnitt nicht knappkantig abgesteppt, sondern nur die Nahtzugaben auf den Beleg. Das finde ich schöner.

 

The pockets I matched by adjusting the gathered skirt to the paper pattern rather than to the sewn bodice because of the bias which would shift around. Same thing later on adjusting the back skirt gathers to the back bodice. After sewing the pockets to the front skirt, I finished the upper pockets' seam allowances together with the corresponding skirt gathers. Otherwise, they would not have been finished and the linnen is quite fraying.

Die Raffung des Rockteils passte ich an die Oberteil-Papierschnitte an, auch um die Taschenposition festzulegen. Die Stoffoberteile waren mir durch den schrägen FL zu ungenau. Nachdem ich die Taschenteile an den gerafften Rock genäht hatte, versäuberte ich die oberen Kanten zusammen mit der angenähten Rockkante mit der Overlock. Sie wären sonst unversäubert geblieben, dafür franste mir das Leinen zu sehr.

When I topstitched the skirt gathers, I realised that I had not been careful at the left side seam when attaching the skirt to the bodice (pin was too thin). I opened the topstitching, seam and sergerseam to readjust because I knew that it would bother me otherwise. It took me maybe 10 minutes and I felt much better.

Beim Absteppen der Rockraffung merkte ich, dass ich beim Annähen des Rockteils an das Oberteil nicht gut aufgepasst hatte (zu dünne Stecknadel), die Seitennaht hatte sich ziemlich verschoben. Ich trennte Absteppnaht, Naht und Overlockversäuberung an dieser Stelle ein Stück auf, korrigierte die Seitennaht und nähte die drei Nähte nach. Das ganze dauerte vielleicht 10 Minuten und ich fühlte mich danach viel besser.

The hem is sewn- you know it already ;) - with my sewing machine's narrow hem foot (Bernina 69). When hemming, I realised that there are some little perforations left of the fabric production. I don't know what to do with them.

Den Saum habe ich- Ihr erratet es schon ;)- mit dem Schmalkantfuß meiner Nähmaschine genäht. Währenddessen habe ich gesehen, dass entlang der Webkante von der Produktion noch kleine Perforierungen vorhanden sind. Ich weiß noch nicht, was ich damit mache.

Liberty Anna Dress ByHandLondon

Dear sewing fellows,

is there such a hot weather where you are living, too? Blue sky, hot sun- the weather you are dreaming of throughout the whole year! For dressing, there are the alternatives of linnen or cotton lawn. I hadn't pressed my linnen dresses so I opted for my Anna Dress by ByHandLondon.

Ist es bei Euch auch so heiß? Blauer Himmel, heiße Sonne- das Wetter, das man sich das ganze Jahr wünscht. Da trägt man am besten Leinen oder Batist. Weil alle meine Leinenkleider im Bügelkorb liegen, entschied ich mich heute für mein Anna Dress von ByHandLondon.

I made variation 3, slash neck with midi skirt out of Liberty Tana lawn Betsy J. There are variations with a front V-neck and maxi length, too.

Ich habe die Variante 3 mit dem Bootausschnitt aus Liberty Tana Lawn Betsy J genäht. Es gibt noch Varianten mit V-Ausschnitt oder Maxilänge.

The bodice, I sewed in size US6/UK10 reducing the bust darts a little as SBA and to obtain size 8/12 at the waist. Unfortunately, thereby the skirt seams do no longer meet the bust pleats which is not dramatic because of the busy print.

Das Oberteil ist in Größe US6/UK12 genäht. Die Brustfalten und rückwärtigen Abnäher habe ich bei der Anprobe etwas verkleinert und dadurch zur Taille hin Größe 8/12 erhalten. Leider treffen die Brustfalten und Abnäher jetzt nicht mehr auf die Rocknähte, was aber durch den unruhigen Druck gar nicht auffällt.

This dress is easy to wear, the shoulders are protected from the sun and the fine fabric is very comfortable.

Das Kleid trägt sich sehr angenehm, die Schultern sind vor der Sonne geschützt und der zarte Batist ist schön dünn.

There is an invisible zip at the center back. All seams are french seams, only the facing is finished with the serger. The hem is sewn with my machine's hemmer foot (Bernina foot 69).

Es hat hinten einen unsichtbaren Reißverschluss, alle Nähte sind als Französische Nähte gearbeitet, nur den Beleg habe ich mit dem Overlocker versäubert. Den Saum habe ich wieder mit dem Schmalsaumfüßchen meiner Nähmaschine gesäumt (Bernina Fuß 69).

Hello, my sewing fellows,

I resisted buying the Flora Dress pattern by BHL even though I loved my Elisalex very much. I wasn`t sure wether I liked the faux wrap because some of the sewn versions I had seen in the net were like too large at the bodice side seams.

Lange Zeit habe ich dem Kauf des Flora Kleiderschnitts von BHL widerstanden, owohl ich mein Elisalex sehr mag. Bei den meisten Versionen fand ich den Sitz des Oberteils nicht überzeugend.

However, when I discovered SewBusyLizzy`s wonderful Flora Nightshade, I immediately bought the pattern. Her dress is so beautiful!

Dann sah ich SewBusyLizzys wunderbares Flora Nightshade und es war um mich geschehen.

In 2014, I purchased some luxurious Liberty Tana lawns. This Forget-Me-Not had been intended for a Collette Hawthorn, but when it arrived, I couldn`t pair the two. For my first Flora, it was the perfect print.

2014 hatte ich einige luxuriöse Liberty Tana Lawns  gekauft. Das Forget-Me-Not hatte ich für ein Hawthorn von Collette geplant. Als der Stoff kam, passten Schnitt und Stoff irgendwie nicht zusammen. Für mein erstes Flora war der Druck aber perfekt.

Liberty Tana Lawn is only 1,35cm wide, so I had to sew a triangle at each lower side corner of the skirt pieces (french seams) and I took my time to respect the print. It is barely visible now.

Liberty Tana Lawn ist nur 1,35cm breit, deshalb musste ich an den unteren Rockecken stückeln (Französiche Nähte). Ich habe mir Zeit für die Musteranpassung gelassen, es fällt daher kaum auf.

To get a light summer dress and because it makes pressing more easy, I didn`t line the dress. I made self bias binding for the neckline and the armholes. All the side and shoulder seams are french seams. So everything looks nice when showing through the high hemmed part. For the bra straps I inserted retainers at the shoulder seams.

Weil ich ein leichtes Sommerkleid wollte und das Bügeln dann auch leichter ist, verzichtete ich auf ein Futter. Ich schnitt Schrägstreifen für die Versäuberung der Hals- und Armausschnitte zu. Alle Schulter- und Seitennähte sind französische Nähte, so sieht auch alles sauber aus, wenn man durch den vorderen höheren Saum nach innen schaut. Für die BH-Träger habe ich kleine Halter an der Schulternaht eingenäht.

For the front neckline, I followed the instructions of Lladybird and cut a strip of fusing interfacing,  0,5cm shorter than the pattern, and eased the fabric in while pressing. After sewing the first seam of the binding, I clipped the seam allowances every centimeter. So everything is lieing flat at the neckline and there is no gaping. However, there are some diagonal pleats left at the front bodice I had seen at other versions, too.


Ich befolgte Lladybirds Tip für den Ausschnitt und bügelte ein 1cm breites Vlieseline-Kantenband 0,5cm von der Stoffkante entfernt auf, das ich 0,5cm kürzer als das Schnittteil zuschnitt. Beim Bügeln schmiegt sich die Mehrweite in das Band. Nach der Verstürzungsnaht mit dem Schrägband schnitt ich die Nahtzugabe jeden Zentimeter ein. so legt sich alles schön flach und nichts klafft auf. Allerdings ergeben sich auch bei mir die diagonalen Falten im Wickelteil, die ich schon bei anderen gesehen hatte.

The only other moment to pay attention is adjusting the front knife pleats and back box pleats with the corresponding bodice darts. To accomplish this I put the pieces right sides together, fix them at the level of the dart and pleat with my left indice and thumb like the future seam and "open" the two fabric pieces. I then adjust exactly the two seams, here dart and pleat, and fix it with a pin. This is an easy way to get neat crossings of seams (e.g. side seams). Was this intelligible?
Der andere Moment, bei dem es sich lohnt aufzupassen, ist das Annähen des Rockes mit der Abstimmung der Rockfalten und der Oberteilabnäher. Ich halte mit linkem Daumen und Zeigefinger die Stoffteile rechts auf rechts wie die zukünftige Naht an der Stelle zusammen und "öffne" die Teile. Dann kann man sehen, ob alles (hier Falte und Abnäher) aufeinandertrifft,  kann nachjustieren und alles mit einer Stecknadel fixieren. So ist es ganz leicht, aufeinandertreffende Nähte zusammenzunähen (z.B. Seitennähte). War das verständlich?

I hemmed the dress with my Bernina hemmer foot 69. I always adjust the needle a little at the left (which is not possible with the straight stitch hemmer foot), you even can sew a narrow zigzag stitch for knits. You can have a look how to begin the seam here. This rapid method I had learned at Megan Nielsen`s instructions for the Cascade Skirt and since then I hemmed all my lawn makes with this foot.

Den Saum habe ich mit meinem Bernina Schmalsaumfuß 69 genäht. Ich verstelle die Nadel immer etwas nach links (was nicht bei dem Geradstich-Säumer nicht möglich ist), außerdem kann man auch Jerseys mit einem schmalen Zickzack-Stich nähen. Den etwas schwierigen Nahtbeginn kann man hier nachschauen. Ich hatte diese schnelle Methode bei Megan Nielsens Anleitung für den Cascade Rock kennengelernt und habe seither alle leichten Stoffe mit diesem Fuß gesäumt. Es braucht ein wenig Geschicklichkeit und Übung, dann macht es Spaß.

I love this dress! It is easy to get in and out, but you have to close a long back centered zip. Maybe time to ask your dearest a favour. The back bodice is quite high and the back hem midi length which provides from feeling bare. The full skirt with its front knife pleats and back boxpleats is so swirly and airy and fans a fresh breeze at the legs.

Ich liebe dieses Kleid! Man kommt durch den langen rückwärtigen Reißverschluss leicht rein und raus. Vielleicht muss man den Liebsten um einen Gefallen bitten. Das relativ hochgeschlossene Rückenteil und die hintere Midilänge geben einem ein angezogenes Gefühl. Der Rock mit den vorderen Messer- und hinteren Kellerfalten ist luftig und leicht und fächert eine kühle Brise an die Beine. Was will frau bei dem jetzigen sehr heißen Wetter mehr?

Downton Abbey inspiriertes Sommerkleid, MMMittwoch

The Downton Abbey Series' costumes have inspired me for three garments.

Mich haben die Kostüme, die in der Downton Abbey Serie getragen werden, sehr inspiriert. Insgesamt habe ich danach drei Kleidungsstücke genäht.

Last summer, while the hot days, I felt the gap of an airy, light linnen dress like all the other women would wear suddenly.

Im letzten Sommer fehlte mir während der heißen Tage so ein luftiges, helles Leinkleid, wie es andere Frauen plötzlich alle anhatten.

The dresses of the Twenties taught me the possibility to wear a dress with a low waistline despite existent hips. Almost all dresses have got a side part with ruffles, pleats or godets giving place and  allowing to move.

Die 20er Jahre Kleider von Downton Abbey eröffneten mir die Möglichkeit, trotz vorhandener Hüften ein Kleid mit tieferer Taille zu nähen. Fast alle Kleider haben zumindest seitlich ein weiteres, angekraustes oder in Falten gelegtes Rockteil oder entsprechende Godets, dass man nicht eingezwängt aussieht und sich darin normal bewegen kann.

After attaching the skirt, it looked just hideous. One moment of regretting to sew; but after shortening the bodice, everything changed. The facings of neckline and armholes are flapping out while dressing. Maybe a next time I would  connect them.

Das Kleid sah nach dem Annähen des Rockteils einfach nur scheußlich und unvorteilhaft aus. Der Moment, in dem man alle Arbeit bedauert; das Kürzen des Oberteils änderte glücklicherweise wieder alles. Die Belege um Hals- und Ärmelausschnitt muss man nach dem Anziehen zurechtzupfen, dass sie nicht umklappen. Die werde ich bei einem nächsten Mal vielleicht verbinden.

I like this dress. The colour is perfect for a hot summerday, it is light and airy. What do you think? 

Mir gefällt das Kleid sehr gut. Die Farbe ist perfekt für einen heißen Sommertag, es hat kurze angeschnittene Ärmel und ist schön luftig. Was denkt Ihr?
